Iyoro Egba, Oyain Akarikatekabou Annual Festivals Begin in Okerenkoko
The ancient riverine community of Okerenkoko in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, has commenced the annual Iyoro Egba and Oyain Akarikatekabou festivals, a significant cultural and spiritual event deeply rooted in the traditions of the people.
The four-day celebration, which attracts traditional worshippers, cultural enthusiasts, indigenes, and visitors from various parts of the Niger Delta and beyond, is dedicated to the reverence of the Iyoro Egba and Oyain Akarikatekabou deities, believed by devotees to be custodians of peace, prosperity, protection, and communal wellbeing.
As part of the annual observance, devotees and custodians of the deities perform sacred rites, prayers, and traditional ceremonies aimed at expressing gratitude for blessings received over the past year while seeking divine guidance, protection, abundant harvests, successful fishing activities, and continued development for the community.
The festival is also a major cultural gathering that showcases the rich heritage of the Ijaw people of Gbaramatu Kingdom. Traditional dances, songs, masquerade displays, drumming, and other cultural performances are expected to feature prominently throughout the celebration, reflecting the customs and values handed down through generations.
Community elders and festival custodians described the event as a symbol of unity and cultural identity, noting that it provides an opportunity for sons and daughters of Okerenkoko, both at home and in the diaspora, to reconnect with their roots and participate in the preservation of their ancestral traditions.
They emphasized that beyond its spiritual significance, the festival serves as a platform for strengthening communal bonds, promoting peaceful coexistence, and fostering socio-cultural development within the kingdom.
The celebrations are expected to culminate in grand ceremonies attended by traditional rulers, community leaders, government officials, cultural groups, and distinguished guests, who will join residents in celebrating the enduring heritage and spiritual values of the Okerenkoko people.
